Danae Anastasiadi

Danae Anastasiadi is currently an undergraduate student at the Department of Pedagogy and Primary Education of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She is also an English language (EFL) teacher and a postgraduate student of Social Neuroscience, Social Pedagogy and Education at the the Department of Primary Education in collaboration with the School of Medicine and the Faculty of Biology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She holds a bachelor's degree in Communication and Media Studies from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and a CELTA Certificate from the University of Cambridge.

A teaching sequence for teaching and learning about sound, the intensities and frequencies of the notes, based on Physical Computing (Arduino) and embodying CLIL strategies

This paper describes a fully structured teaching sequence, based on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and within a Constructionist framework, which familiarizes students with one of the main characteristics of sound waves· its frequency. In order to achieve this goal, students will be working with an Arduino-based arrangement, in which they will experiment by pushing different buttons on the breadboard, producing certain frequencies of notes and reading the value of frequency on an LCD (Liquid-Crystal Display) screen, connected to the Arduino Processor.
The main aim of the sequence is to provide students with the opportunity to reinforce their understanding regarding the nature of sound as a wave and specific sound properties by building the arrangement themselves, with limited guidance by the instructor (researcher). Students will examine the relationship between the pitch of the sound and the buzzer’s vibration and explore the different analogue signals produced by a circuit configuration, called a resistor ladder. Acknowledging that most technical skills and knowledge require the acquisition of the English language, the current paper suggests that a CLIL methodology will be applied in order to enhance students’ content and language acquisition at the same time.
